How to clean cat litter properly

1. Set cleaning frequency

Daily cleaning: For non-caking litter (such as bentonite), it is recommended to clean it at least once a day to avoid overfilling the litter box or producing odors. For caked cat litter (such as crystal litter, paper litter), you can clean it every two to three days according to the excretion of the cat.
Comprehensive cleaning: Perform a comprehensive litter box cleaning at least once a week, including throwing out old litter and scrubbing the litter box.

2. Use dedicated tools

Use a litter spatula to clean up feces and clumped litter, which avoids direct hand contact and maintains hygiene.
When cleaning up, you can place a trash can near the litter box to easily dispose of the litter and feces.

3. Wear protective gear

When cleaning cat litter, it is recommended to wear disposable gloves and a dust mask to prevent the spread of pathogens such as Toxoplasma and to protect your respiratory system from dust irritation.

4. Sort and dispose of cat litter

Cat litter that is not soluble in water (such as bentonite litter, crystal litter) : collect and throw in the trash.
Water-soluble cat litter (such as tofu cat litter) : you can throw it directly into the toilet and flush it, but be careful to flush it little by little to avoid clogging.

5. Clean the litter box

Every time you do a thorough cleaning, remove all the old litter from the litter box and scrub the litter box with warm water and a mild detergent, such as dish soap. Be careful to rinse well to avoid leaving a chemical odor.
After washing, dry the litter box thoroughly to prevent the litter from sticking to the damp walls.

6. Use deodorant and bacteriostatic products

After cleaning your cat's litter, you can spray a pet-specific deodorant product in the litter box to eliminate odors and inhibit bacterial growth. When choosing a product, make sure it's non-toxic, safe, and pet-friendly.
Also consider sprinkling a layer of baking soda on the bottom of the litter box to help absorb odors and urine.
